Happy Valentines Day!
It’s Valentines Day!, millions of men around the world go out of their way and budgets to make their woman feel special. As Valentines Day is an annual event, I beleive as men, it should be something that we could factor in and place in our budget. I am a firm believer that there is nothing wrong spending on your significant other, to make them feel special and loved. However I do not beleive that you would need to go above and beyond your means just to get a really expensive gift. Because after all, gifts are not just about how expensive they are but rather you make your partner special. You do not have to go into debt or use all your savings this valentine.
Won’t it be great that as men, we have an idea of what matters the most to women when it comes to Valentines day spending? Inline with that, I have invited Manila Times Columnist and friend Carla Ravanes to chime in on this very timely topic.
Enjoy!

It’s Valentine’s Day! And since we are living in the social media age, our timelines will once again be filled with photos of gifts/ surprises/ engagement rings people have received during the “sweetest” season of the year. Over the years, gift giving and surprises have been taken to an entirely new level due to the fact that somehow, everything ends up online. For guys, choosing gifts can be quite difficult. In fact, for some men, February can be quite a pressuring month simply because they don’t know what to give. So in line with the season, here are a few tips for you men out there to finally get Valentine’s Day right.
What Men Think Women Want
Most men would think that the more expensive the gift, the more valuable it is. In the age of Christian Grey, it’s easy to think that women are allured by what you give them and the significance of your love for them is directly proportionate to the amount of the gift given.
Included in this list are the following: branded bags, branded watches, expensive jewelry, shoes, and even free for all shopping trips.
For most men, pursuing women equals giving them grand gifts. While there’s a time and place for that, winning a woman over based solely on the amount of gifts given isn’t quite practical. To begin with, even if you have more than enough resources to buy ever single Chanel or Celine bag available in the world, at the end of the day, it is what it is: a bag. What does the bag signify? Is it what your significant other wants? Do you buy it just for the sake of impressing the woman without considering what her preferences are?
I’m not saying that women don’t love luxurious things, of course, we love to be pampered and cared for, but there’s a fine line between giving something out of yabang and out of the pure intention of seeing your significant other happy.
What Women Really Need
Personally, I am a fan of beautiful things, however, as I have gotten older and realized the practical side of life, I have realized what truly matters in life. There was a time when I was younger that I would daydream of being gifted with the latest gadget and the latest handbag, however, I have come to realize what does this really say about my priorities and me?
At the end of the day, what matters most in relationships are not the gifts given, but the thought put into it. A material thing won’t save a relationship and a guy’s gift giving skills also say a lot about his money spending habits that will eventually affect the outcome of our relationship if we choose to be together for the long haul.
Being in a relationship means preparing for the future, so how does he prepare for it? Does buying expensive gifts on credit a good thing? Or is it better if he uses the money wisely and save for our future instead? Is he a one day millionaire? Does he spend everything in one place?
At the end of the day, gifts are more significant if they come from the heart and if they’re given out of the desire to make me happy and not to show off.
